The People’s Committee of Ca Mau Province has issued a plan to scale up the intensive super-high-density, low-water-exchange, biosecure whiteleg shrimp farming model (RAS-IMTA) to 1,500 hectares, aiming to promote high-tech shrimp farming that is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Previously, the 100-hectare pilot RAS-IMTA model achieved an average yield of 35 tons per hectare per crop, with a success rate of 70–90%, and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of only 1.2–1.3. The model helps reduce costs, increase profits, and protect the environment by reusing recirculated water and eliminating external discharge.
According to the plan, in 2025 the province will expand the area to 1,500 hectares, with De Heus Co., Ltd. implementing 1,000 hectares and Minh Phu Seafood Group Corporation implementing 500 hectares. Expected yields range from 22–25 tons per hectare per crop, with net margins at approximately 53% of revenue and an FCR below 1.2. The goal is to transition from traditional farming to advanced recirculating technology, reduce CO₂ emissions, adapt to climate change, and move toward international certifications such as ASC and BAP.
Relevant departments, agencies, and local authorities are tasked with raising awareness, providing technical guidance, and selecting qualified households to participate. The province will standardize technological procedures, conduct training programs, and apply Industry 4.0 technologies such as sensors, automatic feeding systems, and environmental monitoring via camera. At the same time, a Coordination Team, Advisory Team, and green credit mechanisms will be established to support farmers.
Ca Mau will also build a brand for RAS-IMTA shrimp and encourage processing and export enterprises to collaborate with cooperatives and farmers within a linked value chain that meets GlobalGAP and ASC standards. The expansion of the RAS-IMTA model is expected to create a breakthrough, reinforcing the development orientation of “ecological shrimp – high-tech shrimp,” in line with Vietnam’s green growth strategy and the sustainable development goals of the shrimp industry.
